000. Part No.
410501
020. Short Description
Lightweight, engineered growing medium for extensive vegetated roofs.
070. Product Description
SEM lightweight growing medium was developed specifically for use on extensive vegetated roofs. SEM is formulated according to rigorous, industry proven guidelines for particle size gradation, dry vs. saturated bulk density, porosity, water retention capacity, hydraulic conductivity, pH balance and organic matter content.
080. Application
SEM lightweight medium is recommended for vegetated roofs on structures with limited loadbearing capacity.
090. Frequently Asked Questions
- Why is it necessary to use engineered growing media on vegetated roofs rather than regular topsoil?
Roof load capacity is generally limited, and engineered soils are far lighter than topsoil. Topsoil is a combination of silt, sand, and clay, which is prone to compaction, resulting in reduced water flow and loss of air capacity. Engineered soils are much higher in mineral content, particularly lightweight materials including pumice, expanded clays and shales.
- What are the components of the SEM soil mix?
The soil formulas are proprietary, but non-toxic recycled materials are used whenever possible including compost and manufacturing byproducts.
- Where does SEM growing medium come from?
Diadem works with local soil producers to create custom mixes for different vegetated roof applications.
