Net Zero Apartment Community in the Heart of Portland
» Oct. 23, 2018 «
We are proudly announce, that we were part of the builders, who made the first Net Zero Community aka Tillamook Row in Portland, OR with the design/build firm Green Hammer.
The 16-unit apartment complex near the Williams/Vancouver Corridor is just two miles from downtown, and will be one of the first rental complexes on the West Coast to be certified Net-Zero in energy consumption. The complex boasts substantial rooftop solar panel coverage, vegetated roofs from Diadem, triple-paned windows and heavily insulated walls.
Greg Walton is Director of Field Services and Senior Superintendent for Green Hammer. He said the footprint of Tillamook Row was large enough to create a structure with more than 100 units similar to other complexes under construction in that neighborhood but chose not to.
They wanted the tenants to form a sense of community through a main courtyard, an added approximately 100’ by 30’ green space at the front door of each unit. In addition to that, many of the units and the central community building feature green roofs, with an approximate area of 1500 square-feet in total, which gives a pleasant line of sight from a unit’s living area to the center courtyard without seeing much roof structure.
Walton says that beyond its aesthetic value, the green roof’s secondary utility is in its thermal insulation, roof durability and adding to the stormwater management credit.
Diadem Green Roof system were chosen, Walton said, because of their competitive price, durability, style and the excellent support service they received from the local Diadem sales representative.
